The role of an international athletic administrator comes with its own set of unique challenges. Leading an athletic department overseas comes with increased travel for teams, finding a place for student-athletes to stay, working through visa complications, and more.

That's why the NIAAA is committed to serving the international athletic administrator!

We want you to feel supported no matter where you are on the globe. We have resources and opportunities specifically designed for the international AD so you feel prepared and confident in your job.

Certification

Earning your certification will enhance your ability to better serve in your role and help you earn respect and credibility. Plus, you'll set an example in the athletic department for others to seek professional development.

If you're working outside the U.S., you can earn any NIAAA certification of your choosing. The two certifications specifically designed for international athletic administrators include:

Registered International Athletic Administrator (RIAA)

  • Open to those seeking employment or knowledge in the field of international athletic administration, this certification is excellent for recent graduates or those wanting to enhance their skills and resume.

Certified International Athletic Administrator (CIAA)

  • Open to athletic administrators with two or more years of experience who are seeking employment or knowledge in the field of international athletic administration.

Leadership Training Courses

The 900-level Leadership Training Courses are dedicated to assisting the international athletic administrator. You are welcome to take any of our courses in the 500, 600, or 700 levels as well—they'll help you develop the necessary athletic administrator skills.

We currently offer five 900-level courses, with four of them available to take online:
